I just got my AFAA Group Exercise certification earlier this summer. I also took the Practial Skills and Choreography workshop. However, I have no real teaching experience and have no idea how to start my own class. Can you give a newbie some expert advice?
Thank you.
Tahirih,
Make sure you really know the various exercises and choreography for the class. Memorize and master it. Practice at your house in front of the mirror. Be confident.
Then, go to a YMCA or community center in your area and get an assignment to teach your class. Put a lot of passion into it and make it fun. Develop a rapport with the participants and get to know their names. Create a following of people and communicate with them by email and your own website.
Check out other successful instructors to get class ideas on exercises, choreography and music. Attend conferences and workshops to get more ideas. Read the IDEA publication every month. Network with other fitness professionals. Live the fitness lifestyle to be a great example and always look your very best.
Hope this helps you.
