Last year while I was visiting Brazil, I took notice of the many plastic surgery offices across the city. They were located in the ritzy sections and had a modern, stylish look to them . . . kind of European looking. I thought to myself, this has got to be a lucrative business in Brazil.
My instincts were correct. I recently came across an article written by Adriana Brasileiro on the bloomberg.com website detailing the huge popularity of plastic surgery in Brazil, and especially with Americans and Europeans. There’s even a new term for it called “lipotourism.”
According to Brasileiro, over 50,000 foreigners traveled to Brazil to have their tummies tucked and to get a “Brazilian butt-lift.”.
The popularity of plastic surgery has even given birth to a popular American show on FX called “Nip Tuck (cool show, BTW).”
Why the huge increase in recent years?
A few reasons. First, Brazil has some of the best plastic surgeons in the world. In fact, Ivo Pitanguy, is considered the “Father of Plastic Surgery,” and has taught more than 600 surgeons from 43 countries his techniques. Brazil (mostly in Rio) also has some of the best facilities in plush, resort-like settings.
Second, the cost is much lower compared to fees in the United States and Europe. For example, an average cost for a face lift in Brazil is $1,900. In the United States, it’s around $6,000.
My other instincts tell me that most of these people seeking these kind of plastic surgery services are “looking for the quick fix.”, very similar to the magical fat burner pill. Yes, just find the right doctor, pay a few thousand dollars, and then you can have that great body you’ve been dreaming of.
Would it not be better (and cheaper) to be involved in a well planned fitness and nutrition program?
My theory is that most of these “beauty seekers” will do just about anything to attain a sexy body, except hard effort, discipline and sweat.
What do you think?
Of course, I believe plastic surgery has it’s place and benefits many people greatly. There’s many plastic surgeons who have helped people with facial deformities, scars and other health issues. I, for example, had my ears tucked in when I was 8 years old. I looked like “Dumbo” and purposly had long hair as a youngster to hide my ears. Plastic surgery helped my self-esteem immensely when I was young.
In the long run, following a well planned exercise and nutrition program with consistency will give you way better results to build a better body and be truly healthy. Do it yourself.

I am an 18 year old living in australia and I am going to brazil oct 08 for a cosmetic vacation. I am going to have three procedures, a nose job, cheek augmentation for higher cheek bones and breast impants. All at an incredible price, let’s just say I got quoted by an Australian plastic surgeon and breast implants alone cost the same as what I’d pay for all three in Rio. I think its terrific what they do and everyone complains about all the celebrities being beautiful and everyday women are envious about their looks. Well now the option is there for everyone! Honestly it will take me only 7months to work and save for my surgery/flight and accommodation, and spendings on credit. And theres my dream holiday and a great investment into my beauty and confidence and future. Thank the lord for RIO DE JANEIRO
your new blog is verry beutifulllllll! thanks jana.
(***no your mail add.verry sorry****)
So sorry to hear about people buying breast implants.
The complications: loss of sensation (that’s unsexy - if you can’t get aroused in your breasts because of the surgery ) and silicone reactions are tragic, but the worst of it is, most augmenting plastic surgery proves (unless it’s to correct a disfigurement) that the main lack in the patient’s life is a lack of people who care about their inner self, starting with the patient.
Developing the inner self and making it valuable is the best investment - and will attract those who value it.
Polishing the exterior will attract those who care about the exterior. Not a plan for durable happiness.
I had breast augmentation and lip enhancement done in Brazil and I can’t say how pleased I am. As a model and professional cheerleader these enhancements have advanced my career and have easily payed for themselves! My breasts alone open doors that were closed to me before surgery.
whats the big deal about it? mans like it, dont ruin their fantasy, unless theyre gay!!!!!!
All this proves is how shallow society has made the public. The fact that people see this as such an urgent issue that they will travel thousands of miles for these procedures is, bluntly, sad. Honor and dignity seem to be a fading memory as we are no able to change who we are.
I’d be too worried about something going wrong…
I’m just curious as to who the girl in the picture is!
I’m of two minds about this. On the one hand, our medical tech is still so primitive that these procedures all have their own dangers—the loss of sensation post-implants has always seemed to me to be the triumph of style over substance, and I hope to live long enough to see most of the rest of it look barbarously crude.
On the other hand, I can’t stand the worship of effort or pain for its own sake. I’m _glad_ my mother had an epidural when she had me; I’m _glad_ I have this mechano-brain to send screeds off into the æther and so save me the anguished pain of addressing and seealing an envelope.
Work does not make you better, it merely makes you tired enough to accept obvious sour-grapes-isms like “it’s character-improving”. There will always be goals worthy of hard effort and unobtainable otherwise; let’s save our effort for those.
i feel for the women out there whom feel that their bust size earns them respect/standing within society, i am happily married to a woman who is size A. I think TV has corrupted our thinking and the norms; which is why I don’t watch TV at all. All we see on TV is woman with large busts, fake lips, and god knows what else is fake; all in the name of rating… hope one day our society accepts the norm and live happily without prozac…
I say who cares everyone is entitled to their own opinion, if men or women feel it necessary to have certain surguries done then so be it. It’s not money they’re spending.
well this response is for the guy who said his wife had an a cup….well first off…im really happy you like small breasts. a lot of men (and women) do. next is….just because your wife has small breasts does not make it less “norm” to have large breasts…and if you haven’t noticed…its pretty damn “norm” to have fake breasts. also some ppl need prozac…dumb ass….some ppl are born less fortunate and need a chemical to help change the way their mind comprehends their emotions. clearly you need to put the lotion away and give mr skin a rest cuz its fogging your mind…and think of it this way..if yer wife wanted an augmentaion..would u hold it against her??? if so…you never really loved her at all.
Hello Jesse! Thanks for writing a comment on my blog.
Women look great with small breasts and big breasts. A woman doesn’t have to have large breasts to be hot. There’s plenty of women who look awsome with small size breasts. And of course, there’s lots of woman who look gorgeous with big breasts. What matters is what they think. At the same time, having an augmentation is quite fine too so long as a woman does it for her own reasons, and not the pressure from another person or what society thinks. If my wife wanted an augmentation, it would be totally her decision and I would support it.
Has your girlfriend or wife had an augmentation?
I don’t understand your comment about Prozac and how it relates to this post. Do you use Prozac? You might want to have your doctor check to see if it’s really working . . .
